3 MAIN WAYS FOR ARTISTS TO GAIN FANS FROM SCRATCH

DISCLAIMER : I'm not saying I possess the truth. All I'm doing is giving my experience even though it's a fairly short one. But since I was doing what I'm about to tell you, I've seen my following counters growing hella fast! 


1. INSTAGRAM

Instagram is right now the most effective way to gain new fans from scratch ! All you have to do is post new art at the right time using the right #tags for art. Some tips for better engagement : make sure your ig page contains only art. No picture of yourself out of context, no food, nothing except your art. Make sure your images are square or closely square. and lastly, doing fan-arts from time to time will attract a bunch of new followers but don’t do that too often as you’ll end up with 80% of your fanbase not caring about your original art but your fanarts.


2. DEVIANTART

Posting a deviation makes it appear on the home page for a couple of seconds before getting crushed by other new posts. If your art is outstanding, you will eventually gain some watchers. A more effective way would be to put your deviation on as many deviantart groups as possible (according to the theme of your art). Other ways would be posting thumbnails on the deviantart forums threads that are for that purpose and lastly, getting a daily deviation (the most effective way). A lot of artists had their careers exploding thanks to one and only daily deviation. So try making this happen.

3. FACEBOOK

The least effective one in my opinion. Posting on art related groups will attract some following on your personal facebook account or links provided in your bio, but a large part of these fans are actual artists. This can be a good source of exchanging, learning new things and helping each other to grow. again you can post fanart on groups dedicated to the franchise or character you drew and that will surely generate a lot of following but as i said earlier, don’t do fanarts too often.



All of this can be self growing if you keep redirecting your IG fans to your facebook page and such. I pointed out ways you could make fans FROM SCRATCH. I know there are a lot of other ways that require at least couple of hundred followers before starting making a snowball effect. But these here are HOW TO START GETTING NOTICED.


I made sure to make it quick, short and packed with informations. Don't hesitate to show this to other artists if you think they need it! If you have other effective ways, make sure to tell me about them in the comment section!

Why I don't have a Patreon yet ?

Lot of people asked and still asking me "why don't you create a patreon?" Well I'll try to answer on this post to avoid any further questions like this one :

First of all, what is patreon? Basically it's a website (www.patreon.com) for content creators (digital artists, singers, youtubers) where they can be supported ($) by their fans/followers to keep doing what they do and eventually be able to live from their passion. Is it a Kickstarter alternative? No. In Kickstarter people basically give an amount of money to the creator once for all to help him/her achieving his/her PROJECT. Here on Patreon we're talking about monthly support. Means that people are going to pledge 1$ or more each mounth (automatic process once you enter your credit card informations) to keep supporting the creator for what he/she does. But wait, not many people are going to throw money like this for art's sake!? Actually there's another thing that pushes people to pledge on patreon : REWARDS. Creators are allowed to set different packages for monthly/weekly..etc rewards depending on how much you pledge. It could be pledging 1$ -> receiving wips of every work, pledging 5$ and receiving HD work+psd+wips, 10$ pledge for everything above + HD videos and so on...

Now... I will answer the question. I wouldn't say that I will never do a patreon. It's just that it's not the right time. Let me explain..
Coloring is a pain in the a** when it comes to copyright. As you know I don't own the full artwork even if sometimes it's just a shitty rough drawing on white background that I color afterwards it's still NOT TOTALLY MINE and my work could be deleted if the person who drew this in the first place takes legal measures. Even if it's a fan-art!! Can you imagine? In legal words it would be called "stealing intellectual property". I got some of my colorings removed from Redbubble due to copyright because the original drawers have power (I get several warnings from anime studios, editors and all the shit). Aaaand that leads us to my point : I think that it's not the right time to create a patreon account even I know that if I do create one everybody who messaged me would pledge because they're saying so (I hope it's true lol). But right now I wont. I will keep doing what I do. Once I have the ability to create my own artworks (not fan-arts) I will create a patreon. :) Thank you for reading.


EDIT (2YEARS AFTER) : Now that I've basically stopped coloring and started becoming more of a creative artist that owns his original arts, I think it's not the time yet to think about a Patreon. I want first to build a strong following, fidelity and love of people who are interested excusively in my original art, not anime or manga. Let's see how it goes. The way I'll sort this out will be by doing future polls to see how many of you guys will be committed to be my patreons if I ever did one.

TREMBLAX'S COLORING CONTEST #2 with Amaterra

So couple of days ago I did my first coloring contest and I'd say it went kinda well. I was disappointed by some things but overall it was a good experience (I hope it was for you too).
